So I Was Watching The Grammy’s and Was Like WTF???

For the sake of this Blog…I will call myself a music expert. I was watching the Grammy’s Sunday night and I was listening to the nominees for each category and was like…WTF!!!! they don’t belong in this category! I’m not sure who puts these categories together, but I think they might want to consult me next year. Who the hell is Bon Iver/ and why is he in the Alternative category.

Alternative Music is Rock Music that comes from the underground scene or Independent Label rock group that reaches mainstream success. They encompass a variety of sub categories like punk rock, gothic rock , new wave and the post-punk seen. They came from bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Ramones, The Talking Heads, and The Sex Pistols. They’re bands like Green Day, Radiohead, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janes Addiction and bands derived from this culture.  You could hear this music on stations like KROQ 106.7 LA, WFNX 101.7 Boston, 89X 88.7 Detroit and 107.9 The End Cleveland. The music you heard on these stations were pushing the envelope, it was edgy, wild.  The DJ’s that played this music was often criticized for doing so but later praised for turning their stations into the tops in the market. Today they are bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, August Burns Red, The Black Keys, A Day To Remember, Breathe Carolina, Paramore.

The Alternative music scene today is hard to single out, it’s almost mainstream itself. Proof of this is the Grammy’s themselves…They have an award category. The very term Alternative would make you think of the origins…underground…only the few listened to this music. In the eighties and nineties it was only if you live in the large cities or if you knew someone. Today with the internet, you can sit in a office in Fremont, Ohio and listen to a radio station in LA or to Pandora or other internet radio stations.

I wish it were like it was in the beginning…or the early years. I would come home from California get in my friend Lee’s car and put in a tape…and he’d be like…what’s this…who’s is this??? I could watch it change him as it did me. It was like when music changed the world…back when Rock itself was the alternative. It was a time when Pirate Radio came alive. See the movie….awesome!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boat_That_Rocked .

If you’re looking for Alternative Music today look to the festivals like The Warped Tour, Bamboozle Festival, Rock on the Range and to the radio stations above…they still play it (except The End…its now rap). To the Grammy’s…Quit screwing with my music categories…Rock is Rock, Alternative is just that, Find a new category for Bon Iver! and Mumford & Son’s….I’m not sure where they belong but it ain’t Rock!!!!

Here’s a few clues….

Rock music = Guitar, Base Guitar and Drums…I’ll allow a Keyboard

Alternative = Same as above but someone has to scream and jump around

Country = Anything with a Banjo or a Violin

Pop = Anything that wears a dress. Short skirt automatically moves to Alternative

R&B = Must actually have Rhythm and Blues

Rap = Self explanatory
